Career as a Medical Writer in Singapore | Scientific Writing Careers

Medical / Scientific writing is an exciting and lucrative career for those who find writing interesting and have good command over the English language. Medical writers commonly find employment with contract research organizations (CROs), pharmaceutical companies, medical communications companies, healthcare journals, web-portals etc. They can also work as freelance writers and provide writing services to various clients. As the name suggests, these professionals are primarily tasked with the creation of relevant medical and scientific documents. They work in close collaboration with different experts in science fields. They are expected to write complex scientific and medical documents in a simplified language. When employed with pharmaceutical companies or CROs, medical writers are primarily involved in regulatory writing which is the preparation of documents required for submission to regulatory agencies. Examples of such documents are clinical trial protocols, clinical study reports, common technical document etc.

Along with great writing skills, medical writers should have scientific and medical knowledge.

Following are some of the responsibilities of medical writers:

  • Creation of Clinical Trial Protocol, Clinical Study Report (CSR), Investigator Brochure (IB) and other trial related documents
  • Extracting data from statistical analysis reports and presenting it in a readable and understandable format within the clinical trial report

- A degree, preferably in Life Sciences
- A degree in English language / literature with some medical writing work experience
- Training or certification in medical / scientific writing is recommended
- Even though medical qualifications are not a must, an understanding of physiology and anatomy is preferred. Basic understanding of diseases and their treatments is another advantage.
- Understanding of relevant writing techniques is preferred


In order to be a good medical writer, you will need to be organized enough to be able to multitask between projects and handle deadlines well. Attention to detail and good word processing skills go a long way. You need to be self-motivated and easily adaptable.
