Medical writing is a rapidly evolving discipline that comprises of writing documents related to the pharmaceutical industry especially the drug development phases and in general related to the medical fraternity. There are two general areas in which medical writers can specialize within the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, namely regulatory writing and marketing material writing also known as medico-marketing writing.

Medical writing plays a vital role in all the stages of product development and has a high impact on the success rate of all new products, inventions and devices.

A CenterWatch market research analysis back in 2008 stated that the market for medical writing has improved in size with a rate of around 15% each year for the last five years. It now reaches nearly $700 million. This rise is closely linked to the rising demand for outsourcing of writing related work, improved on by the different drug sponsors looking to meet various regulatory requirements, and also the need to convert clinical study data into written manuscripts for publishing in authoritative scientific and medical sources.

Medical Writers are primarily employed by the pharma-biotech and clinical research industry, medical communications companies, healthcare organizations, media houses, content development service providers, online health portals, or may work as freelance writers. The growth of pharmaceutical companies, full service CROs, early phase CROs, SMOs, and other related companies with highly specialized services has naturally increased the demand for medical writers.

The James Lind Institute is committed to develop aspiring professionals in the clinical research industry, and to provide them with all the vital and up-to-date knowledge and expertise.
